The Commission has been established by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On Commission under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the Issues of Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction” dated 11 January, 2010, No.915
The decision made by the President to establish the Commission under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the Issues of Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (hereinafter referred to as “Commission”) is considered as a reasonable step forward to realize the course for further strengthening of Kazakhstan’s role as one of the acknowledged world leaders in non-proliferation. Kazakhstan has an advanced experience in nuclear disarmament and serves as an example of the peaceful country that entirely attached to the idea of achieving and maintaining peace, free from the nuclear weapons and other types of weapons of mass destruction.
The Commission was established at a time when the role and responsibility of Kazakhstansince its chairmanship in the OSCE has been significantly increased on the international arena. In his video address to the OSCE Permanent Council unveiled on January 14, 2010, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev identified the response to the erosion of the non-proliferation process as one of the main priorities of the Kazakhstan's Chairmanship.
The Commission serves to create an additional impetus to the activities of our country in non-proliferation and disarmament, including the elaboration of initiatives on strengthening of the world’s nuclear non-proliferation regime.
