Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Olaf Scholz held tete-a-tete talks

September 16, 2024

Akorda welcomed the Federal Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz, arriving on an official visit to Kazakhstan.

The Kazakh President and the German Chancellor introduced members of their delegations. The Head of the Honor Guard performed a welcome ceremony, followed by the national anthems of the two countries.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Olaf Scholz then held a tete-a-tete meeting.

The Head of our State thanked Olaf Scholz for accepting the invitation to pay an official visit to Kazakhstan.

– This is the first visit in 14 years of the German Chancellor here, so it is a historic visit. I am sure that we will give a strong impetus to the development of our cooperation and to further increasing bilateral trade. This is very important, since Germany is one of our major European and even global partners. We will do our utmost to further deepen and strengthen our mutual ties, – Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.

In his turn, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his gratitude to the President of Kazakhstan for his hospitality and emphasized the importance of further strengthening of the Kazakh-German relations.

– I thank you for the invitation and the opportunity to discuss our bilateral relations and contribute to its advancement, - the German Chancellor noted.

The parties discussed issues of expanding political, trade and economic, cultural and humanitarian ties between the two states. Special attention was paid to cooperation in the field of energy and green transition, industry, mining, transport and logistics, climate change, ecology, agriculture and education.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, at the request of the Chancellor, commented on the settlement of the Russian-Ukraine сrisis.

- It is a fact that Russia cannot be defeated militarily. Further escalation of the war will lead to irreversible consequences for the entire humanity, particularly for countries directly involved in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Unfortunately, a good chance to reach at least a truce was lost with the failure to conclude the Istanbul Agreement. However, the possibility to achieve peace still exists. It is vital to thoroughly consider all peace initiatives proposed by different states in support of a political settlement of the war that would lead to halting military hostilities, and then proceed to negotiating territorial issues. We believe that the Chinese and Brazilian peace plan deserves support. State leaders come and go, but peoples, especially neighbouring ones, should live in peace and mutual understanding. Kazakhstan shares the longest delimited land border with Russia in the world. Our cooperation is developing within the framework of strategic partnership and alliance. In Kazakhstan we have a genuine sympathy for the Ukrainian people and their unique culture. Our countries never had any disagreements. The Embassy of our country continues to function in Kyiv.
